Image Whilst on holiday in June we got some Welsh Cakes and whilst simple they were rather nice.

How hard can they be to make? The recipe is:
210gm flour
110gms butter
85gms caster sugar
Handful of sultanas
1 egg
Dash of milk

Mix butter and sieved flour together until breadcrumb like. Then add the sultanas, sugar and egg and mix to a dough. Add milk to adjust consistency. Roll out to about 6mm and cut into 50mm circles. Then put some butter on a cast iron griddle and cook for about 2.5-3 minutes on each side.

That is the theory!

The mix was fine but the cooking.... They stuck to the pan and within seconds the kitchen was full of smoke. Then so was the house. Can still smell it this morning.

Removing the burnt bits they tasted OK. I put them out for the birds but they wouldn't touch them - even gulls wouldn't touch them.

This is what they should look like. I suspect coal tastes better than my effort. Still you learn from failure and I've learned to always use non-stick pans!

Think the pan wasn't greased enough, possibly too hot, the mixture a little too dry, the cakes a bit too thick. But apart from that all was fine :)
