They have wings and they flap them! We use geese/goose as a generic term for a flying bird. As in " Oh, look there are a few geese in the garden" when it is actually a few goldfinches, sparrows, and a blackbird.
We do get loads of geese of all types flying over in the spring and autumn as they migrate. Seem to use the flat and marshy areas by the Forth river as an overnight stop.
