The West Mid was one of the hospitals I used to control the renal ambulances. We later just subbed the work out to a cab company that operates from just inside the West Mids front entrance (Wheel get you there 24/7) for cost reasons.
I also had Ealing, Charing Cross (where I was based), St Charles, Northwick Park, Hayes renal, Central Mid and Watford hospitals renal units, turning out around 2000 journeys a week. I dont do it now as the contract was taken over by another company and I opted for redundancy as Im just months from retirement and made economic sense with 14 years service to take the money and run .
The first time I went to the West Mid (before controlling I was on the road 20+/- years ago) I was smoking a cigarette around the back of the West Mid (Park road entrance) and everybody was giving me dirty looks I couldnt understand why. Only when I was looking for somewhere to put the cigarette end did I realise I had been leaning on a big 20 odd foot Oxygen cylinder (its fenced off now) and thought shittt, no wonder the looks
