You will be glad you asked that question now!!!
NHS covers the cost of the operation and ip here in Scotland we get free prescriptions too. That is why Trump/BoJo want a no deal Brexit as there are huge amounts of money to be made there. A £10 prescription could become a £500 prescription. How many people could afford that? Probably why they have been stockpiling body bags.
You can have additional health insurance if you want and often is included as part of your salary. This may give you the opportunity to jump the queue by halving it done in a private hospital. My mum looked into getting it done privately and it would have been at least £12,000 depending on recovery time. So for me, I would need 2 hips and 2 knees which would be in the region of £50k!
My mum’s hip (and her age) has meant that she finds it very hard to walk. She fell in the garden and whilst she didn’t break her hip it was damaged. That lack of walking meant her leg was infected so the surgeon said they wouldn’t operate. Doctor said just put cream on it so there was a bit of a conflict. Mum then paid £450 for a private consultation and that doctor said it wasn’t infected but just swollen due to inactivity and the operation should be done.
Then they didn’t want to do it because of my Mum’s heart failure issue in 2016. This was news to her! So eventually they have agreed to do the operation but have declared her to be high risk so she has had to sign a lot of waivers for it to go ahead in case she croaks on the operation table.
For me, the replacement knee was always you are too young as it will wear out and replacement of a replaced knee isn’t a good idea. However, they are now lasting a lot longer so that isn’t an issue. They would probably last the rest of my life. With the hip it is now a case of you are too fat. That I know. But I cannot walk that far because of the pain. The other day it really did take me 30 minutes to walk 300 metre. So it isn’t like I can go and walk a few km to help lose weight. I have lost 6kg in the last 2 months though but it will be quite a while before I reach my ideal weight!
Currently I am on a near maximum dose of naproxen which to be honest not sure if it is doing anything, I also use some creams which do a little bit of help and also a TENS machine. The other day I had the TENS set to 11 and it was painful!! The combination of those makes it tolerable. Sometimes it can be OK and I can do stuff and other times each step is a challenge. The advantage of the TENS machine is that with all the pulsing from it my butt should be really nicely toned!
This sounds like a sob story but I didn’t mean it to be that. The NHS is really good especially for emergencies but there are often queues for surgery. I think they do use excuses to avoid operations. I think if I had been able to get my knee done sooner I wouldn’t have been where I am now as walking would be easier and would help with general fitness.
