I have used generic cartridges in printers that were USB connected and not very intelligent. They worked fine. WiFi connected newer models that get firmware updates can get fussy. My mums printer got updated and then, allof a sudden, gets messages saying that thank you for using genuine cartridges!! Older printers probably get forgotten about so don't have the software to revoke unbranded carts.

Have to admit that the Ecotank printer is working fine. £32 for a full set of refills that should last for at least 2k prints. We have loads of free paper from when I worked in printing so not afraid and the prints are very good. Would recommend but get one with a screen.
